Baby Einstein’s Baby Mozart Music Festival Could Be Better

Baby Einstein products, especially the Music Festival series (Baby Bach, Beethoven and Mozart) are designed based on the premise of the “Mozart Effect”, which inconclusively states that children who are exposed to classical music have increased cognitive development that will assist them in the school years and beyond. This was marketed as a way for parents to give their children a leg up on the competition. The other premise of Baby Einstein is that it be used to foster interaction between parent and child. In general I think this portion gets neglected but that’s every parent’s prerogative.

Baby Einstein Skepticism

The first time I saw Baby Einstein was as my she was using it video as a primarily as a babysitter while she took care of things around the house. The brief clips I saw were simple toys, hand animated or manipulated to classical music. Needless to say I was a bit skeptical about the worth of the entire series.

Since I’ve had my own little one, I’ve had more opportunity to explore Baby Einstein videos on 123Movies. There are two distinct series of videos; content oriented, suitable for 9 months amp; up and the Music Festival videos, suitable from birth on up… which includes Baby Mozart. Being exposed to Baby Newton first and then Baby Mozart, I’m definitely not impressed with their presentation of classical music in these music festivals.

Toys, Toys and More Toys

The main gist of Baby Mozart is familiar objects (primarily toys) manipulated to Mozart’s classical music with repetition being key to developing an infant’s cognitive skills. The toys included are different train sets, a seal climbing/sliding toy, a variety of perpetual energy gadgets, stuffed animals (both animated and not) and several more. Additionally there are scenes where items are manipulated buy a mysterious female hand, like puzzles or a ring stacker. And there is one scene that includes a baby at the very end of the video – this is the only actual person (besides the mystery hand) in the video. Interspersed throughout are puppet shows where the puppets (now well know as Baby Einstein characters) perform. My son’s favorite is the “Blah” scene where a dragon puppet comes out and says “blah.” He thinks this is absolutely hilarious. There is also scenes where several puppets interact making only small noises, not with words.

Baby Einstein - Baby Mozart (1998 CD) (1) - YouTube

Baby Mozart Music

The box states “All our DVD’s are set to music specially reorchestrated for little ears.” There are 5-6 different Mozart songs playing over the course of 30 minutes – there may be more songs as I don’t have an exact list. Some songs are from an orchestra and others synthesized, but all are decent on the ears (both baby and mommy’s). The only exception here would be the Alphabet song (didn’t know that was Mozart did you?). In the middle of the video, we get the Alphabet song which seems to be synthesized using animal sounds as the notes. The song doesn’t last long, but it’s still rather annoying.

Shunned at first… then accepted

This was a Christmas gift when my son was 14 months old and he had very little interest in it at the time. Given a choice he would always pick Baby Newton or a cartoon video over Baby Mozart. It just didn’t hold his attention so it was cast away to the video cabinet. I don’t really blame him as it was way too repetitive for what he was used to. Every so often over the past year we would bring it out again, but it just wasn’t an interest. Now at the age of two, my son has re-awoken to this video and seems to enjoy it. I think this is first because of the “Blah” guy and he has an understanding of what the toys are doing. He is at the point where he likes watching videos over and over, so this one has gotten a lot of play. Also, he likes music of all sorts, and this is a nice calming video for him to watch before bedtime.

Mommy’s Opinion

As stated above Baby Einstein is meant to encourage parent/child interaction. This is how we watch videos in our home (with the exception of the ones needed for shower taking of course). I find it very difficult to follow along with the Baby Mozart video, like I can with other shows. To begin with, minus a few, there is no real excitement to the objects in the scenes, making it difficult as a parent to get excited about them. Additionally, the scenes spend so much time on certain toys from every aspect of the toy, like the seal climb ‘n slide toy or the trains. There is only so many times you can discuss the same toy. Then they must revisit the toy five times even after you are bored with it.

A Little About the DVD

Baby Einstein Videos generally retail between $15-$20 each and can be found anywhere videos or baby stuff is sold. The DVD contains additional special features such as different language tracks (French, English and Spanish), discovery cards (flash cards of vocabulary), puppet shows (a replay of the puppet shows in the video) and the toy chest (clips of the toys used in the video).

Overall my son does like it and the music is decent but the way the video is set up doesn’t have much logic to it and thus make it difficult to watch. There are better Baby Einstein videos out, that teaches basic concepts.

Movie Review – Moneyball with Brad Pitt (2011)

Brad Pitt put his heart and soul into this film. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Billy Beane, the real-life general manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team. Unfortunately, his close buddy George Clooney won the Golden Globe for his role in The Descendents.

Billy Beane was a former baseball player who gave up a scholarship to Stanford to play for the New York Mets. The scouts were wrong about him and he did not play good ball. He stayed with the game he loved by becoming the General Manager of the Oakland A’s, a team that was strapped with a low budget for recruiting the best players.

The story is based upon the book of the same name written by Michael Lewis and revolves totally around the A’s 2002 season and the unorthodox way that Billy Beane, with the help of Yale economics graduate Peter Brand (played by Jonah Hill), chose the members of the team. Peter Brand’s theory was to look closely at a player’s “on-base percentage” through a statistical method known as sabermetrics rather than his play in the field or any other conventional method of choosing a team member. This revolutionary method is looked at askance, particularly by the team’s manager Art Howe (portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman), who does his best to discredit the duo.

After an extremely slow start in the A’s 2002 season, the team turned around their game and succeeded in winning 20 consecutive games which were an American League record. Sadly, their winning streak did not continue and the team seemed to fall apart in the first round of the playoffs, knocking them out of the possibility of winning the World Series that year.

It would not be fair to reveal Billy Beane’s decision on how to play out the rest of his career, whether to stay with the A’s or to move on to a more lucrative position. You will have to watch this blockbuster movie to learn the ending.

We are introduced to the personal life of Billy Beane, mostly through his relationship with his 12-year-old daughter Casey since Billy is divorced from Casey’s mother who has remarried. Casey, played by young Kerris Dorsey, shows a remarkable facility with the guitar, accompanied by her singing of the tender number called “The Show.” She has a talent that we will no doubt see more of in the future.

You may not be a baseball fan, but the presence of Brad Pitt is enough to make up for that. Brad Pitt has yet to win an Academy Award although he has one Golden Globe Award under his belt (for Twelve Monkeys).

The Ideas Behind the Man: Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming was the important and famous creator of the James Bond series but most of his early life focused on his work developing the American Central Intelligence Agency. In 1941 Fleming worked with William Stephenson who was the director of British intelligence operations in the United States. The idea of setting up an American secret intelligence agency was an idea that Fleming had contemplated and he was more than wiling to help General Donovan in discussing his own idea. The COI eventually developed into the OSS and later involved into the intelligence agency known today as the CIA.

Fleming’s role in the American intelligence agency played a huge role in inspiring him to create the M16 British intelligence agency and secret agents such as James Bond. In 1953 Fleming wrote his first novel, Casino Royal. It is his first novel where Fleming develops the character of secret agent James Bond as he is introduced to the reader.

Fleming was inspired to create From Russia With Love (which you can watch online on through the time period in which he lived. The Russian intelligence agency used in his novel known as SMERSH was an actual anti-Soviet spy elimination and assassination program used by Russia during World War Two and the Cold War. SMERSH stands for the acronym “Smiert Spionam” that in English means “death to spies.” This group contained parts of the Gestapo and mob parts of Europe.

In the later Bonds films by Fleming, an intelligence agency known as SPECTRE is introduced which stands for the “Special Executive for Counter Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion.” The organization was an international crime group which also linked to the crime group SMERSH that contained parts of Gestapo and mob groups from Europe.

The same intelligence agency SPECTRE was used in the movie production instead of SMERSH. Fleming also got the idea of calling James Bond “007” from Fleming’s time with the British navy. The navy used a Double 0 prefix in all of its top-secret coded signals that it sent out. Fleming created the slogan “licensed to kill” for James Bond’s job title as a device to interest the audience and gauge the character of Bond.

When Fleming’s second Bond novel was released, it received high praise from President John F. Kennedy as it appeared on his top ten favorite books, prompting it to appear on the list of famous British books and a must read. Kennedy convinced Fleming to sell the production rights to the novel so that he could make a great movie.

Another sign that Fleming’s Bond film was a reflection of the times in which he lived was the post World War Two with the characters in his novel and portrayed in the film. Fleming was captivated by the Cold War Period which was marked by secret intelligence and spy networks on both sides of the Cold War. “From Russia with Love” depicts the spy intelligence and assassins of an independent intelligence agency. However, the scenes in the movie and in his novel depicting the training base came from live first hand knowledge of the subject with his work as a journalist. As Fleming once said, “I can trace most of the central incidents to real happenings.”

Christopher McCandless Going to Alaska and Warms Hearts Along the Way

After I read the book Into the Wild, I desired to learn more about the young man who traveled to Alaska. I never expected to like the movie less than the book. I did learn much more about Christopher McCandless and am glad for having watched the film of his journey. My problem with this film began almost from the beginning of it when they were making Chris seem clinically insane. I take issue with that. Anyone who watches and listens to the people who knew him can see this young man was intelligent, crafty, intuitive, calm, and very sane!
Also many of the people who knew Christopher McCandless personally were touched by him and were very lucky to have known him. He was so caring about everyone and always did the right thing. Maybe that is why some characterize him as crazy, just because he was not a party-let’s-get-it-on kind of guy. Most of us have some type of issue with our parents and can understand wanting to leave and never look back, especially in your 20’s when the world looks bright and new. Where Alaska seems the perfect destination for some alone time. Chris never expected anything bad could happen to him. He trusted life, strangers, and the universe.

This film of Into the Wild goes back and forth from Christopher McCandless’s past to the present where he is living by himself in Alaska. A little confusing for me to keep up with the timeline and when what happened to him. There is unnecessary nudity in the film and a very slow-motion shower scene which felt odd to me. Christopher McCandless trained his body for a life in Alaska, he learned about killing and cleaning animals so he could fend for himself, and so many new friends along the way gave him tools and clothing. He was prepared for living in Alaska by himself. He was a very smart guy, intent on fulfilling a dream. He made it to Alaska after working at odd jobs along the way and hitch hiking. Again the film seemed to take the viewpoint that Christopher McCandless had lost his mind with cursing, screaming, and talking to himself. I believe he was in heaven and proud of himself for making it, proud that he could fend for himself even in Alaska….alone! Along the way not only did people help him with knowledge and tools but Chris helped those people as well. All were sad to see him go and tried to stop him from going. Asking him to stay with them. If this young man had been insane, I do not feel that would have happened like that. He was so polite to everyone, no matter what.

Would I recommend this film? Sure. But you will come to care for Christopher McCandless and be upset at how he is portrayed at times. This was based on a true story and should have been told in truth. I doubt one person in real life ever saw Chris do anything close to insane. He was a responsible, intelligent person who was thinking clearly and wanted to go to Alaska. He planned as carefully for it as anyone else would plan for a vacation. Not only will you come to care about Christopher McCandless but also all of the people he meets along the way. Was it a tearjerker? For me, no. The book was more of a tearjerker for me. It did make me smile at some of Chris’s quotes on his philosophy of life and living life.

There were many instances of slow parts to the movie Into the Wild and I felt my mind wandering. The actors did a great job but many times there would be nothing going on but shots of the scenery.

10 Best Movies to Watch in Summer

Summer is the season of action, when Hollywood unleashes its biggest-budgeted films on audiences looking for a thrill. The right movie can offer a perfect diversion from the heat, and there have been hundreds of movies that add to the dynamic, uplifting spirit of summer.
Here are my top 10.

“Raiders of the Lost Arc” (1981)

The world is introduced to Indiana Jones, America’s answer to 007. Harrison Ford embodied the archetypal hero, complete with a quest, charm and human flaws. An epic adventure, “Raiders” offers what many contemporary flicks don’t – a strong plot without leaning on the crutch of overused special effects.

“Bull Durham” (1988)

Summer and baseball go hand-in-glove, and writer/director Ron Shelton’s classic is the best baseball movie ever. There’s enough subplot to entertain those who don’t care much for the game. But the incredible depth of the film is owed to its focus on struggling minor league ballplayers rather than on those that make it to “the show.”

“Splash” (1984)

Without “Splash” most people might never have known who Tom Hanks was. The little romantic comedy has a huge heart thanks to Hanks, and Eugene Levy and the late John Candy do the comedic heavy lifting. If summer is for falling in love, this movie makes the list by sparking America’s love affair with Hanks (years before he was sleepless in Seattle or had mail).

“Top Secret” (1984)

Plain old credit-to-credit slapstick. The “Airplane” brain trust stayed true to their comedic style in this World War II spoof. Val Kilmer is so good, you have to wonder why he stayed away from the genre after “Real Genius” came out in 1985 ( “McGruber” and “Top Gun” don’t count). “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” would be a possibility here, but you kind of have to be a fan.

“Back to the Future” (1985)

It’s classic summer fun, and could almost be considered a crossover between comedy and sci-fi, with a touch of cliffhanger thrown in at the end. That’s plenty of entertainment, but everything works – the music is perfect for both time periods, production value holds up today and the main performances are arguably each respective actor’s best film work.

“Forrest Gump” (1994)

The Tom Hanks/ Robert Zemeckis epic was as big a summer hit as it was ambitious. Even the soundtrack was a big seller. The plot included nearly every significant American story over three decades and managed to do it without feeling bloated. This blockbuster had comedy, drama, adventure, and a bona fide movie star making us believe that an idiot can make more sense than most.

“Rocky” (1976)

If Sylvester Stallone’s boxing masterpiece doesn’t pick you up, nothing will. The bleak Philadelphia setting might leave you cold, but the against-all-odds story is undeniably bright. It’s a special film that is able to deliver a happy ending without compromising for a predictable one.

“Scream” (1996)

Kevin Williamson’s high-concept script is so unique one wonder’s how the movie would have turned out without horror master Wes Craven’s expert direction. Luckily, we don’t have to. A slasher flick that spoofs slasher flicks without lampooning them, it’s just a rippin’ good time.

“Die Hard” (1988)

Sometimes you need a summer movie where everything blows up. Where the action-packed plot would be ridiculous if you had time to dissect it between explosions. Bruce Willis has enough one-liners to make Arnold Schwarzenegger shoot something and Alan Rickman plays one of the best film villains of the 1980s. Yippie ki-yay —

“Blazing Saddles” (1974)

Okay, this is admittedly a guilty pleasure, but that’s part of what summer’s about. Not even Mel Brooks could make this movie today, but the absurd sense of humor is a brilliant way to show the absurdity of racism. You’ll laugh your butt off one second and hate yourself for it the next.
