What sealed it for me was the complete lack of robot dialog in the trailers… despite there being plenty of speaking clips from the humans. The Transformers of the 80s wasn’t just about robots and explosions; there were actual characters involved.
So, Transformers is on my not-worth-the-bother list… however this quote was good enough that I figured I’d post.
The robots had the predictable and tiresome “but humans are so violent” philosophical debate. At this point we’re pretty much used to sanctimonious aliens showing up and tut-tutting at us in movies, although it was pretty irritating to hear it coming from a bunch of robots who’d had a war that destroyed their entire homeworld, to the point of making it uninhabitable for robots.
That pretty much sums it up. From everything I’ve heard so far Transformers is just more Bay/Bruckheimer silliness. I’ll catch the South Park parody instead.

Well … I give it a ‘B.’ Maybe “B is for Blockbuster.” It isn’t a great movie but I doubt … I highly doubt–that the 80’s characters were any kind of study in depth.
I might be wrong–I didn’t see the TV show–but I just can’t see it.
Of course what’s cool to a 12 year old will be different than what’s cool to a 17-year old and that doesn’t make the 80’s show bad.
But I think my 12-year old self woulda love the movie.

At first I was pretty shocked that you didn’t want to even bother with Transformers… but I just got home from seeing it, and now I understand why.
Yeah, it was fun to watch, what with the robots and the explosions and the what-not, but the plot and the dialogue in the first half was sort of excruciating, and I kind of want that hour of my life back.
And while you can never go wrong with giant robot fight scenes, they kinda dragged it out a bit too long. At least it looked cool.
